"As resident 'Provider of Jangle' I was thrilled when Mike brought in It's A Lie. Besides being a great song, I've enjoyed the challenge of trying to play banjo, saw, and harmonica each at some point during the song when we do it live. I enjoyed even more being able to do that more successfully when we recorded it. This track also holds one of my favorite memories about the recording sessions: Jim in the studio playing the washboard. Maybe I was just feeling punchy cause it was late, but watching him on the monitor, it looked as if he was just sitting alone in the center of a room, slowly stroking his ab muscles....." Alex
lyrics
I would like to sleep
With your hair as a shade on my face
But I got plans to keep
Other time, other folks, other place
I feel so unmoored
Though my feet have been nailed to the ground
Don't be reassured
When I say that I'll see you around
With one hand I will push you away
And with the other I will beg you to stay
When I say I don't want you to cry
It's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie
Promises were made
When the sun was a ball on a string
Do you feel betrayed
Now you know what the morning can bring
Were we so naive
Did we think that the summer would last
I still can't believe
Autumn leaves started falling so fast
With one hand I will push you away
And with the other I will beg you to stay
When I say I don't want you to cry
It's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie
(insrumental break)
If I should return
I will run to your arms like a kid
What's it take to learn
It will always turn out like it did
With one hand I will push you away
And with the other I will beg you to stay
When I say I don't want you to cry
It's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie
